How to get the Child Tax Credit

Families must file an income tax return to get the Child Tax Credit, even if they don't owe taxes. The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers Free Tax Preparation Help for families with low income.

New this year: Families can choose to get part of their future 2025 Child Tax Credit in advance

Normally, families receive their Child Tax Credit in a one-time payment when they file their taxes. This year, in addition to their 2024 Child Tax Credit one-time payment, families can choose to get part of their 2025 Child Tax Credit in advance.

If a family chooses to receive the advance payments, the advance payments will be included in the SNAP budget that is used to determine eligibility and allotment (amount of SNAP). The additional income from the advance payments may result in a decrease of SNAP benefits.

SNAP benefits are not impacted for families that claim the Child Tax Credit without advance payments.
