In 2023, Governor Walz, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, and legislative leaders passed legislation to establish the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, bringing together programs aligned around children, youth and families from across four existing state agencies. DCYF was launched on July 1, 2024, with Commissioner Tikki Brown in place.
Between July 2024 and July 2025, programs and staff will transfer from the Departments of Human Services, Education, Health and Public Safety. This transition is supported by leadership and capacity from the DCYF Steering Team and DCYF Implementation Office, housed at Minnesota Management and Budget.
The services provided by these programs are critical supports for children, youth and families across the state, and preventing service disruption is a priority. People, providers and partners should continue accessing services and supports in the same way as before. No action is required to renew or continue services through DCYF.
The transition will be gradual, with short- and long-term changes. As this new agency is established, documents may have previous agency logos or names, and the DCYF website may temporarily redirect to original agency web pages for more details. The information is still accurate and can be used to get support, share resources and learn more.
