USDA federal actions

We are aware of a letter that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sent to the State of Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 9 regarding federal actions that impact USDA funds coming into Minnesota. We are working with our local partners to analyze the impacts of this latest federal action, including potential impacts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

See if you qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) when you apply at mnbenefits.mn.gov. Expedited SNAP assistance helps families in emergencies get benefits more quickly. Families who qualify for Expedited SNAP assistance can get benefits in 7 days or less.

Apply for SNAP and other benefits online in 20 minutes or less at mnbenefits.mn.gov.

SNAP applications can take up to 30 days to process. Please contact the county or Tribal Nation where your case resides with questions about your case or application status.

Other USDA program updates

Several state agencies administer United States Department of Agriculture funding and are coordinating to share information related to the federal funding freeze. The updates below reflect information currently available from other United States Department of Agriculture-funded programs administered by Minnesota state agencies.

WIC

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) sent the following update to WIC Local Agencies and Vendors on January 12, 2026 - MDH will provide update as they know more.

We are aware of the recent news about USDA federal funding in Minnesota. Please continue services as usual at this time. We don’t believe WIC is impacted but are working with our federal partners for more clarification and information.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CFSP)

MDH sent the following update to CFSP partners on January 12, 2026 - MDH will provide update as they know more.

On January 9, 2026, the Secretary of Agriculture declared that USDA payments to active federal awards would be suspended in Minnesota and the City of Minneapolis. It is unclear if the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) funding will be included in the suspension.
