Family well-being starts with time to care
How Minnesota’s Paid Family and Medical Leave supports families when it matters most
Family well-being depends on whether families have the time, stability, and support to navigate life’s most important moments, such as welcoming a new child, recovering from illness, or caring for a loved one. These experiences shape long-term outcomes for children, caregivers, and communities across Minnesota.
Minnesota’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program, launched Jan. 1, supports families by providing paid, job-protected time away from work. Nearly 12,000 Minnesotans have already applied, reflecting both the need for and trust in a program designed to strengthen family well-being.
Paid leave allows eligible workers to take time to care for themselves or their families without sacrificing economic security. For many families, this time can mean the difference between stability and crisis.
Supporting family well-being across Minnesota
Family well-being is central to the Minnesota’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families, mission. When caregivers can be present, focus on health and healing, while staying connected to work, children are safer, families are stronger, and communities are more resilient.
“Family well-being depends on stability and the ability to care for one another without fear of financial loss,” said Commissioner Tikki Brown. “Paid leave gives families the time and space they need to heal, bond, and stay connected during moments that shape a child’s future.”
Supporting the whole family
Paid Family and Medical Leave reflects a whole family approach by recognizing that children thrive when caregivers are supported. By protecting workers and reducing stress during major life events, paid leave strengthens long-term family stability.
By ensuring families have time when it matters most, Minnesota is reinforcing a shared belief that strong families are the foundation of a strong Minnesota.
