Stay safe when it's hot

Our bodies have to work harder to maintain a normal temperature during extreme heat. Young children rely on their caregivers to keep them safe. Children under age 5 are more sensitive to heat than adults because they:

  • Absorb heat more readily than adults.
  • Have a higher metabolic rate, meaning their bodies produce more heat than those of adults.
  • Are less likely to notice when they are thirsty and overheating.
  • May be unable to communicate their needs.

Heat-related illnesses are preventable.

  • Stay hydrated. Offer water frequently especially if children are active outdoors.
  • Stay informed. Follow local weather and news reports. Check your HeatRisk (National Weather Service)
  • Stay cool. Move to a shaded area, an air-conditioned space, or other cool place. Limit time outdoors as much as possible and take frequent breaks if children are outside.
