Student Grant Holds

The child support office may place a hold on student grants as a tool to collect past due child support, also called arrears. The child support office can ask the Minnesota Higher Education Servicing Office to deny a state student grant for parents who owe child support arrears.

The child support office will do this if either the:

• Arrears are more than 30 days past-due.
• The parent who owes arrears is not complying with a written payment plan, for both current support and arrears, approved by the court, a child support magistrate or the child support office.

The child support office will not put a hold on student grants if the court order prohibits it.
